Jo Dumpleton (b.1989) works from her home studio in Hertfordshire, UK.
After studying illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, London, she began creating intricately detailed pencil drawings, for which she was shortlisted for the prestigious Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize in 2021. More recently, Jo has been exploring the use of acrylic, gouache and watercolour paint. Working in a looser style, her work has become slightly impressionistic and focuses on the forms and silhouettes of historical fashion and trends. Toying with unusual compositions her work has a somewhat contemporary feel.
Each piece of Jo’s work references a found photo. She collects these photos, usually of Victorian or Edwardian women, sat perfectly still in their finest clothes. The appeal of these photos is a mixture of aesthetic appreciation and an interest in the mystery of ordinary lives frozen in time.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries around the UK and is held in private collections internationally. She currently creates collections for Partnership Editions.
